Awaken is a collection of music that spans back a full year. Unlike some CDs where we’ve set out with a purpose, Awaken is more like the collection of photos you might have on your camera. You’ve been taking photos for a year and then suddenly realize you’ve got enough to make a photo album. You didn’t intend on making a photo album when you started, you were just taking interesting photos. Having said that, Awaken isn’t just a CD pulled together for the sake of pulling together a CD. We both feel this may actually be our strongest CD yet.

As for our specific instrumentation, we each continue to experiment with our own voices. Mark has been exploring the possibilities and capabilities that come from some of the applications available for the IPad, often using more than one application for a given piece. In contrast, Warren’s guitar playing has become cleaner, less loaded with effects that may have previously masked the guitar’s sound into the electronic texture. There is an increased of string bass (actually a detuned guitar) to carry the lower registers of a piece rather that keyboard pads. There is also continued development of the use of loopers and syncing loops. The hope is to create music that carries a regular rhythmic pulse without strictly relying on drum beats. Of course, ultimately the music must also not fall into tedious repetition but continue to evolve and morph.
